Jim Jordan faces a crucial vote in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, as he strives to become Speaker amidst opposition from members of his own party.
To secure the position, Jordan can only afford to lose a limited number of votes from his party, but several continued to withhold their support as of Tuesday morning.
Despite the uncertainty, Jordan remains confident, stating: “We need to get a Speaker today, and we feel really good about where we are at.”
Meanwhile, Donald Trump reaffirmed his endorsement of Jordan, describing him as a “fantastic young man” with “very strong” and “very proper” opinions about the country.
In recent weeks, the removal of Kevin McCarthy as Speaker and subsequent difficulty in finding a suitable replacement has left the House of Representatives in disarray, hindering the progression of essential legislation.
Jordan emerged as the party’s nominee after unsuccessful attempts to unite behind a different candidate, and now he must rally nearly all of his Republican colleagues to support him in a public vote.
With Republicans holding a slim majority in the House, and Democrats unwilling to back Jordan, the outcome hangs in the balance.
Despite initial opposition, several colleagues have voiced their support for Jordan, but a small group of holdouts remained, raising concerns about his actions leading up to the Capitol attack and his refusal to acknowledge Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.
If all representatives turn up to vote in the House on Tuesday, Jordan cannot afford to lose more than four votes.
Despite the challenges, Jordan remains resolute, stating: “We’ve got a few more people we want to talk to, listen to, and then we’ll have a vote, tomorrow.”
Jordan’s supporters have not ruled out the possibility of multiple votes on the House floor to secure the Speaker position, citing the 15 rounds of voting it took to elect McCarthy. When asked if he was willing to go through similar rounds of voting on Tuesday, Jordan replied: “Whatever it takes to get a Speaker today.”
