Jerry Jeudy, Broncos Wide Receiver, Sustains Hamstring Injury and Requires Cart Assistance

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos’ wide receivers have experienced a string of unfortunate injuries this summer, and their bad luck continued when Jerry Jeudy had to be taken off the practice field due to a hamstring injury.

“It’s a hamstring,” confirmed Broncos coach Sean Payton after practice. “We’ll conduct an MRI to assess the severity of the injury.”

According to multiple team sources, Jeudy is expected to be sidelined for several weeks. The Broncos are scheduled to begin their regular season on September 10th against the Las Vegas Raiders, which is 17 days away from Thursday.

Jeudy sustained the injury while running an end-around during a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams. Shortly after the play, Jeudy immediately grabbed his upper right leg. He received initial treatment from the team’s trainers on the field before being transported to the locker room on a cart.

As he was being taken to the locker room, Jeudy held his right leg just above the knee, displaying significant difficulty in putting weight on the injured leg. The Broncos’ preseason finale against the Rams is set for Saturday night.

Jeudy is now the fifth wide receiver to potentially face an extended absence since the start of training camp. Tim Patrick suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon in the first week of camp, while KJ Hamler was released after being diagnosed with a heart ailment that requires medication. Additionally, Jalen Virgil, a second-year receiver, suffered a knee injury in the recent preseason loss to the San Francisco 49ers and has been placed on injured reserve.

Brandon Johnson also missed several weeks of practice due to a leg injury, but he returned to practice on Thursday.

Last season, Jeudy missed three games due to an ankle injury and experienced some hamstring issues during offseason workouts leading up to the 2022 season. He was also limited in the Broncos’ spring offseason work due to a thigh injury.

In 2021, Jeudy missed six games with an ankle injury and an additional game due to COVID-19 protocols.

Although Jeudy has struggled with drops during this training camp, the Broncos have seen him become more comfortable in the new offense. Jeudy, along with Courtland Sutton, has been the primary receiver during practice since Patrick’s injury.

Jeudy’s performance in the latter part of the 2022 season showcased his potential, as he recorded 37 receptions for 523 yards and three touchdowns in the last six games. He achieved career-high numbers of 154 receiving yards in the season finale against the Chargers and three touchdowns against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 14.

Regarding the division of workload in the upcoming weeks, Payton stated that it is too early to determine. However, rookie Marvin Mims Jr., who dealt with separate hamstring issues during the offseason program and early in training camp, has been increasingly involved with the starters in recent weeks.
