Blackwater had a triumphant debut for coach Jeffrey Cariaso in the PBA On Tour, as they secured a thrilling 103-101 victory over a short-handed San Miguel Beer on Sunday at Filoil Ecooil Centre in San Juan City.
Jvee Casio, with 22 seconds left, made three free throws off a Flagrant Foul 1 called by John Apacible, before Blackwater’s defense made a critical stop, securing consecutive wins for the first time in the exhibition series.
The win marked Cariaso’s return from the United States, where he focused on his role of improving Blackwater’s performance before the upcoming season starts in mid-October.
“These games are crucial for our team to learn how to close out tight matches,” said assistant coach Joe Silva, who was still in charge during the contest.
Troy Rosario delivered another impressive performance with 19 points, five rebounds, and four assists, while four other players scored in double figures, contributing to Blackwater’s fifth win in eight matches.
Casio, Baser Amer, and Mike DiGregorio each scored 13 points, while Rashawn McCarthy added 10 points for Blackwater.
Despite Allyn Bulanadi’s 26 points and Jericho Cruz’s 25 points, San Miguel couldn’t secure a win, especially considering they only had nine players available for the game.
With the score at 101-99 in favor of San Miguel and 36 seconds remaining, a foul committed by Apacible allowed Casio to make crucial free throws, giving Blackwater the lead. San Miguel attempted to regain the lead, but Cruz missed a close-range shot, and Amer split his free throw attempts, securing the final score.
