Jared Goff’s Future in Jeopardy as Time Runs Out on the Clock

The Rams adored Jared Goff until they didn’t. The Lions might be experiencing a similar drastic shift in sentiments soon.

In 2019, the Rams made the mistake of giving Goff a contract that matched the market, despite knowing he would not lead them to their desired destination. Less than two years later, the Rams sweetened the deal in the Matthew Stafford trade by including an additional first-round pick to rid themselves of Goff’s guaranteed money.

The Lions, in order to secure two first-round picks and a third-round pick, accepted the reality of paying Goff for two seasons. So why not utilize him?

Goff’s performance was solid in 2021, despite having a 3-10-1 record as a starter. His stats saw improvement, and the team progressed, making it an obvious choice to retain him for another year, with discussions even arising about a contract extension beyond 2024.

This year, Goff’s improvement continued, alongside the Lions’. Initially, the Lions appeared to be on course to contend for the top seed in the NFC. If they achieve that, Goff could emerge as a serious MVP contender.

However, the last two games for Goff have been disappointing. He threw three interceptions in a game against the Bears, and the team had to mount a comeback to secure the win. Subsequently, Goff committed three lost fumbles in a shocking loss to the Packers.

Now, the 8-3 Lions face the New Orleans Saints, who are desperate to remain competitive in the NFC South. Suddenly, the Lions find themselves needing to fend off the Vikings or the Packers for the division crown.

Presently, the Lions appear destined for the No. 3 seed in the NFC, with the best-case scenario resembling that of the Vikings from a year ago. They may have to win in the wild-card round and anticipate a tough defeat in the divisional round by one of the NFC’s top teams.

If the Lions don’t turn things around, they could arrive at the same conclusion as the Rams did. Goff, like many other second-tier quarterbacks, may only be able to take a team to a certain level, but no further.

As for the Lions, the more challenging question arises – what will it take to reach and win the Super Bowl? The solution could involve Hendon Hooker, Kirk Cousins, or another player.

One thing is certain – if Goff continues to play as he has in the past two games, it will not be him.
