Janry Ubas Claims Men’s Long Jump Gold at Finland Meet

Janry Ubas, the long jumper from the Philippines, showcased his talent and secured the gold medal in the men’s long jump event at the Motonet Grand Prix Lappeenranta in Finland. Ubas, who is also the reigning long jump champion of the Southeast Asian Games, dominated the competition with his impressive 7.86-meter jump in his second attempt. None of the other participants were able to surpass his mark. Kasperi Vehmaa from Finland took home the silver with a jump of 7.75m, while Zane Branco from Australia claimed the bronze with a jump of 7.70m. This remarkable victory earned Ubas 60 world ranking points, adding to the 90 points he received for his seventh-place finish at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.

With this latest achievement, Ubas has elevated his international ranking to No. 53, accumulating a total of 1160 points. He aspires to join pole vaulter EJ Obiena and women’s 400m hurdler Robyn Brown in representing the Philippines at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, scheduled for August 19-27. The Motonet Grand Prix is a World Athletics Continental Tour bronze-rated event and serves as a crucial stepping stone for Ubas. Guided by his coach Dario Da Rosas, Ubas has two more World Athletics-rated meets ahead of him. He will compete in Trieste, Italy on Saturday, and then in Stuttgart, Germany on July 29, just a day before the qualification window for the world championships closes.
