Jamaica: Tourist Tragically Passes Away Following 21-Cocktail Challenge

  • A British tourist in Jamaica tragically passed away after participating in a 21-cocktail bar challenge where he consumed excessive amounts of alcohol.
  • According to a coroner’s report, his cause of death was alcohol-related gastritis, and he was found in his hotel room at the Royal Decameron Hotel in Saint Ann, Jamaica.
  • Displeased with the emergency treatment received, his family expressed their concerns, believing that he could have potentially survived with better care.

An inquest revealed that a British tourist lost his life in Jamaica after attempting to conquer a challenge of drinking all 21 cocktails on a bar menu. Timothy Alan Southern, a 53-year-old from Staffordshire, England, took this challenge while on a family vacation.

According to ITV News and the coroner’s report, Southern’s lifeless body was discovered in May last year at the Royal Decameron Hotel situated in Saint Ann, a popular tourist hub in Jamaica. The cause of death was determined to be “acute gastritis with associated alcohol intoxication” as he had heavily indulged in alcohol throughout the day.

Prior to the tragic incident, Southern had already consumed brandy and beer before joining two Canadian tourists in celebrating a birthday through the cocktail challenge. Unfortunately, after consuming 12 of the 21 cocktails, he returned to his hotel room. Concerned family members found him in distress, as reported by the Stoke Sentinel.

During the inquest, an unnamed family member expressed disappointment with the medical care Southern received. They claimed that the nurse’s actions were “disgusting” and believed that with better care, his life could have been saved. According to the family member, the nurse did not call for an ambulance, only provided chest compressions instead of full CPR, and failed to take appropriate action despite witnessing Southern choking and vomiting.

The family member further recounted their efforts in saving Southern, mentioning how they placed him in the recovery position, called for an ambulance, and desperately tried to revive him. They expressed frustration and questioned the nurse’s competence, emphasizing that proper care might have altered the tragic outcome.
