Ivermectin for Horse De-Worming Should be Approved to Combat the Resurgence of Scabies, Request Pharmacists.

Pharmacists are urgently petitioning the government to authorize the use of ivermectin, a controversial anti-parasitic drug commonly referred to as “horse de-wormer,” to treat scabies infections amid reports of surging cases and shortages of existing treatments. Scabies, a highly-contagious and intensely-itchy skin disorder, has become a serious concern over the past year, especially among the elderly in care homes and young adults attending colleges and universities. High-street chemists report that commonly used creams such as permethrin and malathion are regularly out of stock, leading experts to suggest that ivermectin, which is already routinely used to treat parasitic infections in children and adults in mainland Europe, could be a viable solution. However, only one product containing ivermectin is currently licensed for use in the UK, leading pharmacists to push for authorization of an off-label prescription for ivermectin to alleviate the burden on dermatologists and resources.
