Simone Fontecchio had a breakout performance, scoring 30 points to lead Italy to a thrilling 78-76 win against Serbia in the second round of the Fiba World Cup. The victory was made possible by the team’s veteran captain, Gigi Datome, according to Utah Jazz player Simone Fontecchio.
Fontecchio praised Datome’s legendary status and labeled his performance as the cherry on top of an incredible career. Despite being 35 years old, Datome showcased his amazing leadership skills by rallying the team in a comeback from a 16-point deficit. Datome, a EuroLeague champion who has also played for the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics, contributed 10 points, with a majority coming in a third-quarter flurry.
