Italy’s Yuri Romano and his team scored a remarkable victory against league-leading Japan in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay. After winning ten consecutive games in the VNL, Japan was defeated by Italy in a challenging four-set match, which gave Romano a significant boost of confidence. Romano expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating that they played exceptionally well and it was a great win for them against a strong opponent like Japan.
The victory did not come easily for Italy, as they had to overcome tough opposition in the first and second sets. However, Japan showed resilience and forced a fourth set by showing signs of life. The turning point came when Yuji Nishida, the hero for Ryujin Nippon, led his team with a successful crosscourt kill to secure a 6-4 blitz, winning the set. The final set belonged to Italy, as they pulled away from a 19-all tie to seal the victory. Gianluca Galassi, Daniele Lavia, and Romano played crucial roles in scoring the last six points for Italy while limiting the Japanese to only a single point.
Italy’s victory was also attributed to the impressive performances of Lavia and Alessandro Michieletto, who contributed 18 and 14 points, respectively. With this win, Italy now holds a 9-3 record in the VNL. On the opposing side, Yuki Ishikawa collected 21 points for Japan, while Nishida scored 20 points in a losing effort.
The match showcased Italy’s strength and determination, proving that they are a formidable team in the VNL. This victory will surely inspire them to continue performing at a high level and face future challenges with confidence.
