In last week’s newsletter, I presented the case against Stalinism and the benefits of early Cold War anti-Communism. Surprisingly, instead of engaging in a debate on Marxism-Leninism, I found myself caught up in a discussion about whether the downfall of Hitler’s Germany was a rightful judgment from God.
This topic emerged from two conversations about far-right politics. One centered around Graeme Wood’s Atlantic profile of Bronze Age Pervert, an online personality and author known for promoting “vitalist,” Nietzschean, or fascist ideologies online. The other discussion involved revelations about Richard Hanania, who confessed (and apologized for) his past involvement in writing for racist publications.
The far-right perspective presented in both stories assumes Western decadence as a given, while arguing that Christianity cannot effectively revive culture. Their central idea is that conservatism rooted in classical and pagan sources, coupled with racial identitarianism, could be more “vital” in addressing present challenges.
In response to this argument, I wrote a pair of posts on the X platform (formerly known as Twitter):
One perspective highlights that a previous attempt to rebuild European civilization based on classical-Teutonic heritage and eugenics resulted in unimaginable atrocities and the complete devastation of Europe.
The declining state of Western Christianity makes the resurgence of right-wing Nietzscheanism inevitable. However, Christians can argue that God’s judgment on that endeavor is already evident.
These posts contribute to the ongoing debate among conservative Christians regarding the emerging pagan or post-Christian right, encompassing various ideological forms, ranging from materialist to mystical, populist to intellectual. This debate involves figures like Bronze Age Pervert and even more mainstream personalities like Jordan Peterson, who straddle the boundary of Christian faith. I’ve previously shared my views on potential pagan futures, including a discussion earlier this year on euthanasia with Hanania himself (who, in my opinion, embodies a pagan libertarianism, regardless of his claim to have transitioned into a neoliberal ideology). However, there is much more to be explored on this topic.
