Is “baby brain” just a myth? A recent study suggests that women with young children have the same cognitive function and memory as those without kids.
- Authors argue that mothers’ perceived memory issues are caused by their extensive to-do lists.
The idea that new mothers suffer from “baby brain” and experience forgetfulness and cognitive fog has been widely accepted. However, a recent study suggests that this notion may be a myth. The study found that women with young babies have the same level of memory and cognitive function as those without children.
Interestingly, it seems that mothers are more likely to believe they have a bad memory, potentially due to societal influence and the notion of “baby brain.”
The researchers recruited 43 first-time mothers with babies aged ten to 13 months and compared them to 43 non-mothers of similar age and education level. Both groups underwent a series of tests lasting 90 minutes, including memorization tasks, number recitation, and code-cracking exercises.
Results showed there was no significant difference in memory, cognitive function or mental processing speed between the mothers and non-mothers
