A 23-year-old man from Beaumont has been charged with a sexual assault in Irvine, which was captured on surveillance video. Brandon Dybdahl pleaded not guilty during his arraignment at the jail courtroom in Santa Ana. He is facing charges of false imprisonment and sexual battery, both of which are misdemeanors. Dybdahl has been ordered to appear in court on June 29 for a pretrial hearing at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach.
The Irvine Police Department arrested Dybdahl on Wednesday morning in Laguna Hills, in connection with the assault that occurred near Graduate and Scholarship. When he was taken into custody, police discovered a white sedan which matched the vehicle seen in the surveillance footage of the attack. Dybdahl is currently homeless and was staying with family friends who were unaware of the alleged attack, according to Sgt. Karie Davies.
The surveillance video, released by the police earlier this week, shows a man wearing a T-shirt and shorts exiting a white vehicle and approaching a woman from behind as she crosses the street. The suspect forcefully grabs the woman from behind, briefly struggles with her, and then flees the scene, getting back into the car which has been identified as a white Nissan Sentra manufactured between 2006 and 2012. Additionally, Dybdahl is also wanted in connection with a hit-and-run incident, as confirmed by Sgt. Davies.
