Iranian Chess Referee Shohreh Bayat Fears Ostracism Due to Activism, as She Confronts Russian Head of FIDE’s Governing Board.

Chess referee Shohreh Bayat, who fled Iran three years ago, has faced further ostracism after challenging the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and its president, Arkady Dvorkovich, for questioning her choice of clothing at a tournament in Iceland in support of Iranian protests and the people of Ukraine. Bayat left Iran in 2017 after being criticised for not wearing the appropriate headscarf at the Women’s World Chess Championship in China and Russia. FIDE has said that officials at top events are required to dress in due decorum. The arbiter handbook specifies that officials must “follow the dress code” to improve the image of chess as a sport. Despite threats of punishment, Bayat has continued to push for women’s rights in Iran. Her activism has attracted the attention of several high-profile chess players.
