Would you spend over £1,000 on a phone that can easily break in your hands? Apple enthusiasts are now facing this question as a review unveils the delicate nature of the new iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Despite its cutting-edge lightweight titanium frame, Apple’s latest flagship device encountered a major problem during a durability test performed by YouTuber JerryRigEverything, also known as Zack Nelson. Known for pushing products to their breaking point, Nelson put the iPhone 15 Pro Max through its paces.

With a slight bend, Nelson shattered the back glass of the iPhone 15 Pro Max in his own hands. The shocking result raises doubts about its high price tag and durability. Surprisingly, previous iPhone models, including iPhones, are generally known for their durability.

“I’m gonna be honest,” Nelson confessed as the glass shattered with a pop. “I did not see that one coming.” This surprising outcome left Nelson stunned, as he has tested smartphones for over 11 years, and most phones, especially iPhones, rarely break or shatter under similar conditions.

The smaller iPhone 15 Pro, on the other hand, did not succumb to the same test and its back glass remained intact, even when subjected to the same level of stress. Nelson speculated that the use of a titanium frame instead of the previous aluminum and stainless steel construction may be the reason for the glass breaking so easily.

While the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max still feature a recycled aluminum internal frame, the outer bands are crafted from strong and lightweight titanium, potentially reducing flexibility and increasing the likelihood of breakage.

Another issue that arose for early reviewers was the titanium band changing color due to oils from users’ fingers. However, Apple has assured customers that this discoloration is not permanent and can be easily removed with a clean damp cloth.

Commenters shared their shock at the breakage, with one user exclaiming, “D*** that break was shocking!” Others began to question if the iPhone 15 Pro Max was worth its high price tag, with one X (formerly Twitter) user stating, “It’s seeming like this may be a year to skip. I’m seeing more and more issues arise.”

These concerns about the iPhone’s construction come after Apple made changes to the design in an effort to make the back glass more affordable and easier to replace when damaged. In previous models, the back glass was more intricately integrated with the metal casing, making repairs difficult and costly.

According to Apple’s repair and service support page, repairing the back glass of an iPhone 15 Pro Max would cost $199 (£163), whereas the repair cost for the 15 Pro is only $169 (£139). In comparison, the iPhone 14’s glass repair costs $549 (£450), making it $350 (£287) more expensive than its successor.

With the fragility of the iPhone 15 Pro Max exposed, consumers now have to weigh the device’s premium features against its potential for breakage.
