Apple is facing numerous complaints from users regarding overheating issues with its latest iPhone 15 models. Some customers claim that the titanium frame of the phone becomes uncomfortably hot to hold.
The iPhone maker’s community forum has been flooded with feedback regarding the overheating problems of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Numerous users have expressed their discontent, with one saying, “I’ve had the new iPhone 15 Pro and it’s so hot, it’s too hot to hold,” (source). Another user wrote, “My skin hurts! What is going on with iPhone 15 Pro Max?”
Numerous posts on the Apple forum discuss the overheating issues of the iPhone 15 Pro series. One user even shared a photo of their iPhone 15 next to a thermometer, showing a temperature of 44°C (111°F) (source). Complaints have also surfaced on Twitter and Reddit.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst at TF International Securities, the overheating issue is likely a result of “compromises” made in the phone’s design to reduce weight (source). The titanium frame, which is a poor conductor of heat, could hinder the phone’s ability to disperse heat effectively. Previous high-end iPhones used stainless steel for their frames.
Kuo mentioned that Apple is likely to address the problem through software updates. He also reassured users that the issue is not related to the new chip deployed in the Pro models, which is manufactured in Taiwan (source).
If not resolved, the overheating issue could potentially impact iPhone Pro sales, according to Kuo. The iPhone 15 was recently launched, with prices ranging from £799 for the basic model to £1,199 for the larger Pro Max in the UK.
Kyle Wiens, the CEO of iFixit, an iPhone repair website, conducted tests that revealed the iPhone 15 Pro exhibited similar characteristics to the stainless steel-clad iPhone 14 Pro, which also experienced substantial heat. Wiens explained that a software update that reduced the phone’s peak-level performance could instantly fix the problem by reducing heat production. He also warned that high temperatures might affect the phone’s battery performance.
