Investigation underway into alleged misconduct within Western University’s women’s hockey program

Western University in London, Ont., has confirmed the initiation of independent reviews due to concerns surrounding the women’s hockey program.

The confirmation arises from reporting by TSN, which alleges claims of improper conduct against head coach Candice Moxley and Western’s strength and conditioning coach Jeff Watson.

“The safety of our students always comes first, and Western has rigorous processes for reviewing and addressing formal complaints,” stated Western in a press release.

“With the assistance of an external investigator, the university has launched independent reviews to thoroughly investigate these matters and gather input from all affected parties. As always, the details of these reviews are kept confidential to respect the privacy of all individuals involved.”

When asked if the London Police Service is involved in any investigations related to the women’s hockey program, a spokesperson responded, “We have not received any reports.”

These reviews are the latest development in the ongoing investigation into allegations of a toxic culture in organized sports.

Hockey Canada has faced significant scrutiny following the revelation in May 2022 that the organization quietly settled a lawsuit after a woman claimed she was sexually assaulted by eight players, including members of the country’s world junior team, following a 2018 gala in London, Ont.

The fallout from these incidents has led to further revelations about Hockey Canada’s National Equity Fund (NEF), which is funded through registration fees and used to cover uninsured liabilities, including claims of sexual assault and abuse.

Hockey Canada recently announced an investigation into members of the 2003 men’s world junior roster for allegations of group sexual assault. However, none of the allegations have been proven in court.
