Investigation Underway: Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Probes Threats Against Grand Jurors in Trump Indictment Vote

Law enforcement authorities in Fulton County, Georgia, are currently conducting an investigation into threats made against the grand jury members who issued the indictment against former President Donald Trump and 18 others. This comes after the personal information of the grand jurors was shared online, as stated by the sheriff’s office on Thursday.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, is actively working to determine the origins of these threats. The office of Sheriff Pat Labat has emphasized the seriousness of the matter and their commitment to swiftly respond to any credible threat to ensure the safety of those who fulfilled their civic duty.

The grand jury’s indictment, which was unveiled on Monday, accuses Trump and 18 others of participating in a scheme to overturn the results of Georgia’s 2020 presidential election. The indictment consists of 41 counts, with Trump facing 13 of them. Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing and labeled the investigation led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis as a politically motivated “witch hunt.”

While grand jury proceedings typically occur behind closed doors, the names of 26 panel members, with three names crossed out, were disclosed in the indictment. Legal experts have explained that it is standard practice in Georgia to include the grand jurors’ names without redactions to allow the defense the opportunity to examine the panel’s composition. This deviates from federal and most state practices where grand jurors’ identities remain confidential.

Following the unsealing of the indictment, users on social media platforms, including far-right platforms like 4chan, started advocating for violence against the grand jurors and Willis. The group Advance Democracy Inc., which monitored the response to Trump’s indictment, discovered a post on the platform X (previously known as Twitter), featuring pictures of some of the grand jury members.

The indictment in Fulton County represents the fourth set of charges brought against Trump by grand juries this year. Apart from the criminal charges in Georgia, the former president faces federal charges in South Florida and Washington, D.C., with the latter arising from alleged efforts to impede the transfer of presidential power after the 2020 election. Trump has also been indicted by the district attorney in Manhattan on 34 state felony counts related to falsifying business records.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to the three cases and has yet to be arraigned in Fulton County. He and the other defendants have until August 25 to surrender to authorities and will be processed at the Fulton County Jail.

Furthermore, the prosecution in Washington has led to threats against U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who presides over the case. Last week, a Texas woman named Abigail Jo Shry was arrested for allegedly leaving a threatening and racist voicemail for Judge Chutkan, stating, “You are in our sights, we want to kill you,” according to the criminal complaint.
