The attorney general of the Dominican Republic is currently conducting an investigation into Wander Franco, the All-Star shortstop for the Tampa Bay Rays. The investigation stems from allegations of his involvement with a minor, according to a statement from the attorney general’s office given to CNN on Tuesday.
While the investigation is ongoing, the attorney general’s office has not disclosed any further details regarding the case.
CNN has reached out to Franco’s representative for a comment on the investigation taking place in his home country.
In an Instagram live video on Sunday, Franco addressed the accusations, hinting that they were unfounded and stating his focus on personal development.
As a result of the social media posts involving Franco, the Rays announced on Monday that the 22-year-old player would temporarily step away from the team’s current west coast road trip.
Major League Baseball (MLB) has also begun its own investigation into the posts, according to an MLB official who spoke with CNN on Monday. Neither MLB nor the Rays have provided specific details regarding the content of the posts.
It is currently unclear whether the social media posts being examined by MLB are directly related to the probe being conducted in the Dominican Republic.
In agreement with the Tampa Bay Rays, Franco has been placed on the Restricted List, which effectively allows him to be on administrative leave without counting towards the team’s 26-man roster.
The Rays released a statement expressing their support for the league’s efforts to understand the situation and stating they would refrain from making any further comments in order to respect all parties involved.
