An investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4 Dispatches has revealed allegations of sexual misconduct and assault against comedian Russell Brand. The claims were made by four women who accuse Brand of pursuing audience members for sex while presenting Big Brother spin-off shows EFourum and Big Brother’s Big Mouth on Channel 4. Brand denies the allegations.

A researcher claims that concerns about Brand’s behavior were reported to production managers at Endemol, the company commissioned to produce the shows in 2004 and 2005, but were dismissed. In response to the allegations, Banijay UK, which purchased Endemol in 2020, has launched an internal investigation and encourages anyone affected by Brand’s behavior to come forward.

In addition to the recent allegations, Brand has also been accused of rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse between 2006 and 2013 during his time working for the BBC, Channel 4, and in Hollywood films. Brand vehemently denies these allegations and has criticized the media for what he believes is a coordinated attack against him.

The allegations were made public in a Channel 4 Dispatches special titled “Russell Brand: In Plain Sight.” Following the airing of the program, the Trevi Women & Children’s Charity in the UK announced it was ending its association with Brand and his charity, the Stay Free Foundation.

The Stay Free Foundation, described as a charitable organization supporting addiction recovery and mental health, has made regular donations to treatment centers and charities. The Treasures Foundation, another organization supported by the Stay Free Foundation, stated that they only knew Brand for his desire to make amends and give back, and they would be seeking feedback from the women they support.

Brand, who overcame heroin addiction in 2003, has since released a memoir called “Recovery: Freedom From Our Addictions” and set up the Community festival, with profits donated to the Stay Free Foundation.

The allegations against Brand include claims of sexual assault, rape, and emotional abuse. One woman alleges she was sexually assaulted during a three-month relationship with Brand when she was 16. Another woman claims Brand raped her at his Los Angeles home, while a third woman alleges sexual assault and threatened legal action if she spoke out. A fourth woman accuses Brand of sexual assault, as well as physical and emotional abuse. Other women who have worked with Brand on TV sets also shared their experiences in the Channel 4 Dispatches film.

Brand performed a sold-out comedy gig at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre in London on the same day the allegations were made public. While addressing the audience, Brand alluded to the allegations, stating there were certain topics he couldn’t discuss during the set.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly commented on the wider issues raised by the entertainment industry and power differentials, but did not comment on the specifics of the allegations against Brand. The BBC and Channel 4 have stated that they take all allegations seriously and will investigate as needed.

Moving forward, Brand’s future remains uncertain as the public awaits the outcome of the investigations and potential legal action.
