Instagram Introduces Major Update to Help Users Manage Screen Time

  • Meta launches two tools to promote responsible app usage among teens
  • Users will receive notifications and nudges to limit scrolling on Instagram

When you’re having trouble sleeping, it’s easy to turn to your phone and get lost in scrolling through Instagram. However, Instagram’s latest update aims to put an end to those late-night scrolling sessions.

Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, has launched two new tools to help teenagers manage their time on these apps.

According to Meta, these updates are designed to empower teens to take control of their online experiences and equip parents with the tools to support their teens.

Here’s what you need to know about these new features.

Meta, which owns both Instgram and Facebook, has launched two new tools to nudge teens to manage their time on the apps

The first tool sends teens a notification when they’ve spent a significant amount of time on Facebook, encouraging them to take a break from the app and set daily time limits.

On Instagram, users will receive a ‘nudge’ if they are detected scrolling through Reels at night.

Meta stated that they are also exploring a new feature that suggests teens close the app if they are scrolling through Reels late at night.

These new features follow the launch of Quiet Mode on Instagram, which helps users set boundaries with their friends and followers. Quiet Mode mutes notifications and sends auto-replies to direct messages (DMs), and users can activate it manually or set it to activate automatically during specific time periods.
