Insights from Orange County’s GOP Representatives on the Biden Impeachment Inquiry: Exclusive Interview with Orange County Register

As the Republican Party continues to delve into President Joe Biden’s involvement with his son’s business dealings, the House of Representatives has scheduled a hearing next week for an impeachment inquiry.

This inquiry comes amidst the ongoing 2024 elections, as House Speaker Kevin McCarthy yielded to pressure from the more conservative faction of his party to confront Biden’s actions in Congress.

Hunter Biden, the president’s son, and his business activities have been under intense scrutiny through GOP-led congressional investigations. Despite these efforts, no concrete evidence has emerged linking his business dealings to the president. Nonetheless, McCarthy, in delegating the impeachment inquiry to the House Oversight Committee, argues that the investigations have uncovered a “culture of corruption” within the Biden family that warrants further examination.

The White House has criticized Republicans for using this as a “political stunt.”

Representatives Young Kim and Michelle Steel, both Orange County Republicans, are not members of the Oversight Committee responsible for the upcoming hearing. However, Kim has stated that she will closely follow the proceedings.

“This inquiry allows the relevant committees to gather more information on serious allegations, follow the facts, and provide transparency to the American people,” Kim commented.

Steel, through a spokesperson, opted not to comment on this matter.

Both Kim and Steel represent districts that voted for Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, rather than former President Donald Trump. Consequently, the impeachment inquiry is seen as potentially problematic for Republicans in competitive districts.

In Steel’s district, approximately 38% of voters are registered Democrats, while about 32% are Republicans and 25% have no party preference.

In Kim’s district, approximately 38% of voters are registered Republicans, with about 34% Democrats and 23% having no party preference.

A poll conducted in 18 congressional districts that elected a Republican to Congress in 2022 but voted for Biden in 2020 revealed that the majority of voters (56%) viewed the investigation as “more of a partisan political stunt” rather than “a serious effort to investigate important problems.” The survey was conducted among registered voters in those districts by the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling.

The Oversight Committee has scheduled the impeachment inquiry hearing for Thursday, September 18, at 7 a.m. PDT.

“This effort is not a legitimate oversight based on factual information or issues facing the American people,” stated Rep. Katie Porter, an Irvine Democrat who serves on the Oversight Committee.

“It is merely a distraction from the Republican majority’s failure to fulfill fundamental governing responsibilities, such as funding the government,” Porter added.

House Republicans, led by Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, obtained thousands of pages of financial records from various members of the Biden family and their associates through subpoenas to the Treasury Department and various financial institutions.

Comer has repeatedly claimed, without substantial evidence, that these documents contain enough information to establish a direct connection between Hunter Biden’s use of his father’s name for personal gain and policy decisions made by Biden during his tenure as vice president. However, no such connection has been proven.
