Back in 2009, we delved into the world of Rockstar Games’ exclusive PS3 project, Agent. For years, we eagerly awaited its release only for it to vanish into the realms of forgotten games. Finally, after a decade of hope, Rockstar removed all mentions of the game from its website.
However, a glimmer of insight into the fate of the elusive PlayStation exclusivity has now come to light. Former Rockstar Games technical director, Obbe Vermeij, in a blog post detailed his time between 1995 and 2009 at Rockstar North, the studio behind the development of Agent. The game was faced with numerous developmental hurdles and failed to live up to its initial promise, ultimately leading it to be scrapped.
Vermeij mentioned, “We really worked on this for over a year but it wasn’t progressing as well as we’d hoped. Eventually, the focus shifted to the next Grand Theft Auto, which led to major cutbacks for Agent. Despite our efforts, it became clear that it was too much of a distraction. The project was later handed over to another Rockstar studio but never saw completion.”
With half the team diverted to Grand Theft Auto IV and the rest to the upcoming Grand Theft Auto V, the downfall of Agent was inevitable. Vermeij’s reflections have shed light on the doomed fate of the game, painting it as a victim of the Grand Theft Auto machine.
Could the enigmatic Agent resurface in the future? While it remains a possibility, we’re not holding our breath. Nevertheless, the abandoned game has left an indelible mark on the gaming community. Do you have any recollections of the Agent hype? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
