Now, I can articulate more precisely what I sought in my students and what I aimed to nurture within them. It is the quality of mind that shines through when students patiently strive to understand concepts, unravel their meanings and implications, and apply them in a way that becomes their personal tools for illuminating the world and guiding their lives. This achievement is evident in work that is clear and concise, devoid of formulaic language. It is this quality of mind that the AI tool, ChatGPT, lacks, despite its attempts to mimic it with clever pauses and an abundance of information, some of which is fabricated.
ChatGPT is an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) machine that has been trained on a vast amount of text, enabling it to communicate in natural language like a human. However, it will never possess the unique quality of mind inherent in every human being and inadvertently suppressed by traditional schooling methods that prioritize efficiency and standardized competencies. This gift, which lies at the core of human judgment, is shaped by individual life experiences and circumstances. Some may go through life without consciously grasping it, yet possess the ability to solve practical problems. As a teacher, my role is to encourage students to trust their minds, embrace mistakes as part of the learning process, and help them understand their own modes of reasoning and the underlying unconscious judgments. In essence, education’s primary purpose is to deepen individuals’ self-awareness.
ChatGPT amazed the world with its human-like capabilities to understand, convey vast amounts of information, and perform various specialized tasks. It seemed capable of doing almost anything, from writing poems and essays to creating project plans and novels. When it was made available as a free resource, users from diverse fields swiftly explored its limitless applications. Its millions of avid users treated it as a resource person with an encyclopedic knowledge of published information or an all-round executive assistant or ghostwriter. The ease with which ChatGPT assumed these roles bewildered many, as its cognitive and intellectual abilities posed a threat to those in creative professions. Users began attributing human characteristics to ChatGPT, treating it as a sentient being capable of offering advice and opinions. This inclination to anthropomorphize machines is similar to how some households treat the Amazon product “Alexa” as more than just a virtual assistant.
While machines excel at complex calculations and processing data, enabling them to provide accurate representations of reality, they lack the capacity for judgment that humans possess. This limitation arises from machines’ lack of values, apart from the preferences programmed into them by their engineers, which typically prioritize efficiency and productivity over other nonquantifiable goals like fairness, equity, sustainability, human flourishing, or quality of life. The danger arises when decision-makers rely solely on algorithms, disregarding human judgment and believing that it’s the only way to navigate the world.
