A 43-year-old man named Michael Nikita Diggins II from Moreno Valley has been charged with two counts of firearm assault and other offenses. Diggins, a convicted felon, pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was arrested after an investigation by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
In addition to the firearm assault charges, Diggins is also facing charges for shooting at an inhabited building and being in possession of a gun as a felon.
During his arraignment before Superior Court Judge Gail O’Rane, it was decided that Diggins would be held in bail of $1 million at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta. A felony settlement conference has been scheduled for July 26 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
According to Sheriff’s Sergeant James Merrill, the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning behind a strip mall in Moreno Valley. Gunshots were heard near the intersection of Iris Avenue and Lasselle Street, prompting a police investigation.
Merrill stated that evidence of a shooting was found behind two businesses, but the shooter had fled the scene. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle stop near a bus stop, with the driver firing a handgun. The two targeted men were identified as “R.R.” and John Doe, although a motive for the shooting was not disclosed.
Through their investigation, detectives were able to identify Diggins as the alleged shooter. He was arrested without incident at a property on Badger Springs Trail after an arrest warrant was served.
Court records indicate that Diggins has previous convictions in Los Angeles County, although the exact nature of those convictions was not specified.
