A 21-year-old man has been charged with a series of attacks against eight women in the East Los Angeles and downtown Los Angeles areas in less than a week. Sergio Andrew Garcia, the suspect, pleaded not guilty to 13 counts including assault, robbery, sexual penetration, and grand theft of an automobile. Despite his arrest in Tijuana, Mexico, Garcia will remain jailed without bail until his next court appearance on August 17, according to Superior Court Judge Kimberley Baker Guillemet. The attacks are said to have begun on July 10 when Garcia allegedly followed a woman from the Pico-Union district, sexually assaulting her and physically assaulting her when she tried to escape. He is also accused of similar attacks on two other women the same day and five more women on July 15, including an assault on a 67-year-old woman outside her home and an assault on an 82-year-old woman who had her car keys and vehicle stolen. Investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.
One of the victims, Rosalina Martinez, described her attack and expressed fear of going out alone in the street again. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna and LAPD Chief Michel Moore urged any potential victims to come forward and provided a hotline for reporting incidents.
