Indiana University announced on Thursday that they have hired Curt Cignetti, the former coach of James Madison, as their new football coach, following the firing of Tom Allen after their third consecutive losing season.
Allen, who had been leading the Indiana team since 2017, finished with a 33-49 record as the Hoosiers’ coach. The team’s recent poor performance, including a 3-9 finish this season and a 9-26 overall record since 2020, led to his dismissal.
Cignetti, who was named the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, led James Madison to an impressive 11-1 season, marking the top record in the Sun Belt conference.
Scott Dolson, the athletic director at Indiana University, expressed his excitement and confidence in Cignetti, highlighting his successful track record and championship mentality. Cignetti, in turn, is looking forward to bringing a new culture and mindset to the Hoosier football program.
Under his leadership, James Madison achieved remarkable defensive and offensive statistics, including leading the nation in rushing defense and tackles for loss per game, and holding a top-20 scoring offense and defense.
Despite James Madison’s ineligibility for the conference title game due to transitioning from FCS to FBS, they have been granted permission to participate in a bowl game due to a shortage of bowl-eligible teams.
