Increasing Patrols in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles in Response to Hamas Attack

Police in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica have increased security and patrols around Jewish institutions in response to the recent Hamas attack on Israel. LAPD Chief Michel Moore stated, “We will be conducting extra patrol to ensure the safety of all.” Beverly Hills Mayor Julian Gold condemned the act of terrorism and called on President Biden and Congress to support Israel.

The Santa Monica Police Department has implemented periodic checks and directed extra cars to respond to the situation. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is also stepping up activity and working closely with federal and local law enforcement partners in monitoring the situation.

Hamas, a Palestinian Sunni-Islamic fundamentalist group, launched the attack by firing thousands of rockets into Israeli towns from the Gaza Strip and sending in ground forces. Israel reported casualties and captured individuals.

Israeli authorities confirmed a second round of rocket attacks on Tel Aviv and other locations in Israel. These attacks occurred on the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared, “We are at war” and vowed vengeance.

President Joe Biden expressed support for Israel, and local leaders, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, condemned the attack. Mayor Bass emphasized the city’s strong Jewish population and expressed solidarity with those affected.

Rabbi Noah Farkas, president and CEO of The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, conveyed condolences and support for Israel. The federation established an emergency fund to assist the victims.

Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA and the Muslim Public Affairs Council provided statements highlighting the ongoing Israeli occupation and its impact on the Palestinian people.
