Increased Number of Texas Migrants Flock to Los Angeles

An additional bus carrying migrants from Texas has arrived in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, marking the fifth bus to arrive since June 14, according to an announcement from Mayor Karen Bass’ office.

The mayor’s office stated, “A bus with migrants from Texas arrived at Union Station today around 11:30 AM PT. Our city has been actively collaborating with city departments, the county, a coalition of nonprofit organizations, and our faith partners to implement a plan established earlier this year. As soon as we were informed about the bus yesterday, we immediately put our plan into action.”

No further details are currently available regarding the latest arrivals.

Prior to Saturday’s bus arrival, the most recent one occurred on Tuesday when a bus carrying migrants from Brownsville, Texas arrived at Union Station.

The L.A. Welcome Collective revealed that these immigrants came from Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Venezuela.

The L.A. Welcome Collective, consisting of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice, Central American Resource Center-Los Angeles, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, Esperanza Immigration Rights Project, and Immigrant Defenders Law Center, issued a statement on Wednesday.

The L.A. Welcomes Collective reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with the City and County of Los Angeles in order to receive and assist asylum seekers upon their arrival. They aim to be a beacon of hope for those seeking refuge while advocating for the fair treatment and respect of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status. These non-profit organizations have been serving immigrants for decades and strive to ensure full integration into society. They emphasize the importance of not politicizing people’s lives and will utilize their limited resources to the fullest until the busing of migrants ceases or a comprehensive solution to the broken immigration system is found.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles released a statement on Saturday afternoon in response to the latest arrival:

“…Our Archdiocese was built by immigrants, and we will continue to embrace our migrant brothers and sisters with open arms. We are honored to be part of the LA Welcomes Collective and the crucial work carried out by each of our partner organizations. Our mission is to show compassion through accompaniment and pastoral care. Together, we aspire to be a beacon of hope for those seeking safety and advocate for the dignity and respect of every human being. Our efforts to assist migrants stem from a place of mercy, reflecting the love of God for his people.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently declared that the border region of his state is “overrun” and hinted at the possibility of more migrant shipments in the future.

“Texas’ small border towns continue to be overwhelmed by the thousands of people crossing illegally into Texas from Mexico due to President Biden’s failure to secure the border,” Abbott stated in a release after the initial bus arrived. “Los Angeles is a major destination for migrants, especially now that it has declared itself a sanctuary city. Our border communities are on the front lines of President Biden’s border crisis, and Texas will continue to provide much-needed relief until he fulfills his duty to secure the border.”

In June, the Los Angeles City Council passed a motion unanimously, instructing the city to draft a “Sanctuary City” ordinance that will prevent the utilization of any city resources, property, or personnel for federal immigration enforcement.
