Business owners in Birmingham have voiced their concerns about the impact of the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) on their costs. According to a BBC report, the introduction of the CAZ has led to increased expenses for local businesses. One of the residents stated that when they placed an order to their shop, they were asked if they were inside or outside the zone. If they were within the taxing zone, £8 was added to their delivery charge. Karen Woolley, representing the Federation of Small Businesses in the West Midlands, highlighted that the implementation of the low emission zone had influenced people’s travel patterns in the city. Woolley also mentioned that the businesses located in the CAZ zone were experiencing negative effects.
When approached for comment, Birmingham City Council, which has previously mentioned the positive impact of the CAZ on air quality, stated that the proportion of highly polluting vehicles in the city had been reduced from nearly one in five to under one in ten.
Recently, Sir Keir Starmer announced that Labour would no longer pursue the widespread implementation of CAZs across the country, scrapping the party’s commitment. Outside of London, CAZs have been introduced in Birmingham, Bristol, Newcastle, Bradford, Glasgow, Bath, Sheffield, and Oxford, all of which are cities governed by Labour.
