The charity recently confirmed that an analysis of NHS data revealed a record number of 25,000 patients being referred for suspected urological cancer in England during November 2022, with prostate cancer being the predominant type. The news comes after the passing of Bill Turnbull on August 31, 2022, who had been bravely battling prostate cancer. Another well-known figure, Stephen Fry, had also been diagnosed with the same disease back in November 2017. To honor Turnbull’s legacy, Prostate Cancer UK is urging people to raise awareness about the disease by encouraging men to take their 30-second risk checker to determine their level of risk and find out what actions they can take if necessary. It is worth noting that there has been a significant increase in referrals since both Turnbull and Fry made their diagnoses public, which has been referred to as the “Turnbull/Fry effect”. Professor Peter Johnson, NHS England’s national clinical director for cancer, emphasizes the importance of discussing any concerns and symptoms related to cancer, as early detection can save lives. This sentiment is echoed by Ian Pritchard, who, upon hearing the news of Turnbull’s passing, sought medical attention and received a prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Pritchard encourages all men to take the Prostate Cancer UK risk checker and see a doctor before it’s too late. Inspired by their own experiences with the disease and the stories of Turnbull and Fry, Wycombe Wanderers fans Alan Cecil and Peter Radford embarked on a sponsored walk. Cecil believes that by raising awareness and promoting early testing, more men can have positive outcomes, just like he did. In honor of Turnbull, the Jeff Stelling’s Football March will be conducted in September, covering a distance of 26.2 miles from Wembley to Wycombe.
