Unemployment in the Philippines decreased in August, and there was an improvement in the quality of available jobs as fewer individuals sought additional working hours, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority.
Citing a nationwide survey, the PSA reported that there were 2.21 million Filipinos who were unemployed or out of business in August, resulting in an unemployment rate of 4.4 percent.
This figure was lower than the 2.27 million unemployed individuals recorded in July, when the unemployment rate stood at 4.8 percent.
Claire Dennis Mapa, the National Statistician, attributed the decline in joblessness to increased retail trade activities related to school reopenings and a rise in agriculture jobs.
Meanwhile, the PSA data revealed that 5.63 million Filipinos sought additional working hours to supplement their income, leading to an underemployment rate of 11.7 percent in August.
This figure was significantly lower than the 7.10 million underemployed individuals in July, when the underemployment rate stood at 15.9 percent.
