Aug. 10 (UPI) — The Illinois State Fair has revealed its iconic and extraordinary exhibition once again: an 800-pound cow made entirely of butter. This beloved attraction is a staple at the annual event, drawing attention and fascination from visitors.

The grand unveiling ceremony of the 102nd Butter Cow was conducted by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Governor Pritzker himself demonstrated his involvement by wiping the condensation off the cow’s glass case, using a squeegee.

The latest rendition of the Butter Cow showcases Illinois dairy farmer Lorilee Shultz from Mill-R-Mor Dairy in Orangeville milking the bovine. Another sculpture within the same case portrays Shultz’s granddaughter, Lucy, nurturing a calf.

Talented artist Sarah Pratt dedicated her skills to craft the 2023 Butter Cow. In a news release, Pratt expressed her gratitude in being able to honor Illinois farm families through this annual tradition. She also shared the personal significance of this year’s creation, as her own daughter Grace participated by sculpting the additional artwork of Lucy and the calf. Pratt emphasized the importance of family within Illinois farm culture and cherished the opportunity to pass down this tradition to her 19-year-old daughter.

The Illinois State Fair commences on Thursday and continues until August 20th. Throughout the fair, attendees can observe the Butter Cow in real-time via the state’s Butter Cow webcam, accessible at https://statefair.illinois.gov/info/webcams/buttercow.html.
