If Taika Waititi’s ‘Thor 5’ Gets the Green Light, It Could Solve a Persistent Marvel Issue

There isn’t really a strong demand for another Thor movie at the moment. The fourth installment, “Thor: Love and Thunder,” released in 2022, turned out to be a disappointment overall. However, it did offer a redeeming quality in the form of its villain, Gorr the God Butcher, portrayed by Christian Bale. Bale’s depiction cleverly subverted the typical image of a bulky comic-book villain by portraying Gorr as waiflike and eerie. While “Love and Thunder” may have fallen short, it stands out among Marvel Cinematic Universe movies for featuring a memorable antagonist. If the Thor saga is to continue, it must maintain this aspect.

Taika Waititi, the director of both “Love and Thunder” and its predecessor, “Thor: Ragnarok,” understands what a Thor film needs. Regardless of personal opinions on his most recent MCU effort, Waititi possesses a strong understanding of Thor’s ongoing journey. Although he is not officially returning for a fifth Thor movie (which is not even in development yet), he still has ideas for Thor’s next adventure. In an upcoming book called “Love and Thunder” by Titan Books (via ScreenRant), Waititi discusses a hypothetical “Thor 5” and what it needs to accomplish in order to be worthwhile.

“It must feel like it is continuing the character’s evolution, but in an enjoyable manner,” Waititi states. For a new film, Thor’s antagonist should present a genuine challenge to the hero while building upon the obstacles he has overcome since his introduction in 2011. “We can’t have a villain weaker than Hela,” Waititi adds. “We need to surpass that and introduce a more formidable villain.”

Hela (Cate Blanchett) in “Thor: Ragnarok” is an incredibly formidable villain.

Marvel Studios

Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of Hela in “Thor: Ragnarok” was a standout. Not only was she one of the first female villains in the MCU, but she also presented a unique challenge to Thor by forcing him to confront his role as the God of Thunder and his ties to Asgard. Her introduction added to the memorable and vibrant world of “Ragnarok.” Waititi drew inspiration from “Guardians of the Galaxy” to bring Thor into the cosmic side of the MCU, and he hopes a fifth Thor movie will continue this trend, pitting the hero against increasingly outlandish and fantastical creatures, monsters, and aliens that honor Thor’s comic book and mythological origins.

At this stage, this is mostly wishful thinking. “Thor 5” has not been given the green light, and it’s uncertain whether Waititi or even Chris Hemsworth, the star of the series, would be interested. Hemsworth recently stated, “If the audience wants it and if there’s something exciting and fun that we believe in, then great. I don’t have the answer yet, but I would love to figure out how we can keep it unpredictable.”

Regardless of whether Waititi returns to shape Thor’s story, it is hopeful that Marvel Studios takes his advice and continues to challenge the hero with intriguing villains.
