  • Hurricane Hilary initially made landfall in the southwestern states of the US on Sunday, but later weakened to a tropical storm.

According to data from flight tracking website FlightAware, a total of more than 6,000 flights were delayed or canceled across the United States on Sunday due to the landfall of Hurricane Hilary.

FlightAware reported that there were 5,239 delayed flights and an additional 1,055 canceled flights within, into, or out of the US on Sunday.

Southwest Airlines was responsible for the majority of these flight cancellations, with 714 cancellations on Sunday alone, accounting for approximately 17% of their daily flights. Southwest Airlines, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is currently the largest low-cost airline in the world based on fleet size as of 2022, according to analytics firm ch-aviation.

In addition, Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas had 348 cancellations, representing over 40% of the airport’s total arriving and departing flights, making it the airport with the highest number of cancellations in the US on that day. San Diego International Airport also experienced a significant number of cancellations, with 252 flights canceled, accounting for over 70% of the airport’s flights.

As of the time of writing, FlightAware has recorded 273 delays and 274 cancellations across the US on Monday, suggesting a gradual recovery of air traffic.

The Federal Aviation Administration, in its Hurricane Hilary outlook on Sunday, explained, “You have to remember this portion of the country is not used to the amount of rainfall, wind, and possible thunderstorms like the rest of the country could possibly be used to.”

According to Insider, the storm is expected to bring a year’s worth of rain to California, Nevada, and Arizona.

On Sunday morning, Hurricane Hilary was downgraded to a tropical storm. This is the first time in 84 years that California has experienced a tropical storm.

Prior to the tropical storm making landfall, major airlines such as Southwest, American Airlines, Delta, and United waived fees for flight changes for passengers traveling over the weekend.

Insider reached out to Southwest Airlines, Harry Reid International Airport, and San Diego International Airport for comment but did not receive an immediate response outside of regular business hours.
