Huge fish die-off found on the shoreline of Texas Gulf Coast.

Thousands of fish have been found dead on Texas’ Gulf Coast over the weekend due to a low dissolved oxygen event, according to officials. The cleanup is believed to have resulted in tens of thousands of fish being cleaned up, with the Gulf menhaden having been the species most heavily impacted. A lack of oxygen in the water, most likely due to excessive algae which consumes dissolved oxygen as it decomposes, causes low dissolved oxygen events. Warmer ocean temperatures increase the likelihood of toxic algae blooms, and the United Nations has warned that climate change caused by human activity is causing warming ocean waters and oxygen loss, having affected marine organisms and fisheries particularly acutely. While the fish kill is believed to be a natural occurrence, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Kills and Spills Team emphasises that such events are common in summer months when temperatures rise and there is less oxygen in the water.
