According to Reddit and Hacker News users, YouTube seems to have implemented a five-second delay before video pages load in Mozilla’s Firefox and sometimes other browsers. YouTube confirmed this delay is intentional, but claims it’s unrelated to the browser and is instead part of a broader initiative to combat ad blockers across all platforms, according to The Verge.
YouTube communications manager Christopher Lawton stated that users with ad blockers may have encountered subpar viewing experiences, including loading delays across various browsers in the past week. Disabling the ad blocker should alleviate the issue, but users may still encounter temporary loading delays until their browsers refresh.
Lawton also mentioned that users can expect to encounter similar issues as YouTube’s ad-blocker detection methods improve.
Initially reported as targeting Firefox, the five-second delay has been seen by users in Chrome and Edge as well. Investigations by Reddit and Hacker News users revealed no indication of YouTube checking the browser type. Mozilla’s senior brand manager Damiano DeMonte asserted that there’s no evidence to suggest this is a Firefox-specific issue.
Not everyone is affected by the five-second delay. Several individuals at The Verge attempted to replicate the issue on both Mac and Windows machines. However, none of them observed the reported delay, whether logged into YouTube or not, using an ad-blocker or not, or in incognito mode.
Google has been aggressively combating ad blockers, particularly on YouTube, which began disabling videos for viewers using ad blockers in June. Last month, YouTube announced a global effort to encourage users to either enable ads or subscribe to its ad-free Premium service for $13.99 per month, emphasizing the importance of ads for its creators.
Google recently introduced a significant change to Chrome that undermines uBlock Origin, a popular ad-blocking extension. This move reflects the ongoing battle between independent developers and large corporations over online ads, with Google demonstrating a strong commitment to push back against ad blockers.
