How Yawning Boosts Safety: Enhancing Vigilance among Nearby Individuals during Fatigue

  • Researchers found that seeing someone yawn makes people more vigilant to threats
  • A previous study found that seeing yawns increased people’s ability to detect snakes

The reason for yawning has always been a mystery, but a recent study suggests it might help us avoid harm.

Researchers discovered that witnessing someone yawn increases people’s vigilance to potential threats. It is believed that yawning evolved as a signal to the group that someone is tired. This prompts the brains of onlookers to become more alert in order to compensate for the tired and vulnerable member of the group.

‘The group vigilance hypothesis proposes that seeing someone yawn should trigger neurocognitive changes to enhance the observer’s vigilance, compensating for the reduced alertness of the yawner,’ explained the researchers from SUNY Polytechnic Institute.
