How will TSA identify you if your hair color is purple but your Real ID states it’s blonde?

Question: I will be renewing my driver’s license next year. Should I inform the Department of Motor Vehicles about my change in hair color from brown to gray? I may have to show my license to the Transportation Security Administration and I don’t want any issues if my license states brown and I’m gray.

– Susan Hunt, Buena Park

Answer: Susan, it seems like you plan to use a Real ID for domestic flights, which is a good choice.

You can update your hair color when you renew your license next year. There’s plenty of time before the TSA begins requiring adult passengers to show a federally accepted ID, with the Real ID being the most popular option among travelers. This requirement is set to start on May 7, 2025.

“When renewing their driver’s license or identification card, individuals should update their personal information with the DMV, including hair color,” said Angelica De La Peña, a DMV spokesperson. “Updates can also be made between renewals, but may require an application fee.”

However, many travelers will have Real IDs that don’t reflect their actual hair color or other physical attributes, like weight. Honk reached out to Lorie Dankers, a TSA spokesperson, for further clarification.

“Identity verification is an important part of the security screening process and travelers should ensure their photo ID is a good representation of them as an individual,” Dankers said. “However, this is mainly between the traveler and the issuing agency, and not the TSA… The TSA officer can compare the name on the photo ID with the name on the boarding pass to determine if the person in front of them is the same as the one pictured on the credential.”

It is important to note that the DMV only accepts specific hair colors, such as auburn, black, brown, blonde, gray, red, and white. However, there is an “other” option available if your hair color is not listed. Additionally, if you are bald, you can select the “no hair” option.

Question: I’ve noticed that the white lines in certain areas of the 5 Freeway in south Orange County are either non-existent or barely visible. One particular spot on the freeway has a section where the lines disappear for about 15 to 20 feet, which can be disorienting. These areas pose a potential danger. Who should I contact to address this issue?

– Joe Jaskowiak, Lake Forest

Answer: Joe, Honk apologizes for the delay in responding to your question.

If the lines are still missing or difficult to see, you can submit a repair request at csr.dot.ca.gov. Caltrans will update you on the status of the locations you mentioned and inform you if any of them fall outside their jurisdiction.
