Joel Embiid Sends Well Wishes to James Harden After Trade to Clippers
Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid expressed his happiness for his former teammate, James Harden, who was recently traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. However, Embiid respectfully disagreed with Harden’s claim that he was held back during his time with the Sixers.
Embiid acknowledged Harden’s exceptional skills and the team’s tendency to give him the ball on nearly every possession. While Harden had the freedom to make decisions, either by getting his teammates open or creating scoring opportunities for himself, Embiid believed that Harden successfully directed the team’s offense and played a significant role in their success. This is evident from Harden winning the league’s assist title last season.
Last season, Harden led the NBA in assists with an average of 10.7 per game, alongside his scoring average of 21.0 points. This accomplishment made him the first Sixer to win the assist title since Wilt Chamberlain in 1967-68. Harden and Embiid formed a dynamic duo, with Embiid winning the league MVP and scoring title back-to-back.
During his introductory press conference with the Clippers, Harden expressed his desire to have a more substantial role, stating that he felt limited in Philly. However, he clarified that his definition of a “leash” did not solely revolve around shooting the basketball. Harden emphasized his ability to think strategically and create opportunities on the court, highlighting the importance of trust and open communication with his coach.
Critics may interpret Harden’s comments as self-serving, suggesting that he wants to regain control of the game. They may argue that this was the reason why he didn’t fit well with the Sixers and question his compatibility with the Clippers. Nevertheless, Clippers coach Ty Lue is confident that Harden, along with other star players like Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and Russell Westbrook, will make the necessary sacrifices to transform the team into championship contenders.
While in Philadelphia, Harden excelled as a facilitator, contributing significantly to Embiid’s MVP campaign. Nearly half of his assists went to the center. However, his scoring average and shot attempts were the lowest of his career since his early days with the Oklahoma City Thunder. This demonstrates the sacrifices he was willing to make for the team’s benefit, something the Clippers organization believes he will continue to do.
Clippers president of basketball operations, Lawrence Frank, affirmed that Harden’s primary goal is to win a championship for the team. He stressed that this is a collective effort by individuals who have accomplished much individually and are now focused on achieving a shared objective.
Ultimately, Harden arrived in Philadelphia with the same goal in mind. While he had a significant influence on the Sixers’ style of play, their partnership was characterized by compromise and collaborative decision-making.
