The Philadelphia Eagles, known for their mastery of the rugby-style quarterback sneak, have become experts at this unique play in the NFL.
During short yardage situations, quarterback Jalen Hurts positions himself under center with two or three players behind him.
As soon as he receives the snap, the offensive line pushes forward and Hurts benefits from a powerful shove from behind. This strategy often allows the Eagles to gain the necessary yardage for a first down. However, some critics have called for the elimination of this play from the game.
When asked about the potential ban on the “push play,” Hurts responded, “I have no thoughts on it. We’re the only team that executes it as effectively as we do. I’ve even heard someone wanted me injured because of it.”
The “push play” has been legal since 2005 when the NFL removed the prohibition on pushing offensive players from its rule book.
Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert has been instrumental in executing this play effectively.
