This year, Dictionary.com has added nearly 570 brand new entries along with 350 new definitions and over 2,500 revised definitions. According to Lit Hub, one major change on Dictionary.com is the elimination of binary-gendered phrases like “his or her” and “he or she”. Instead, these terms have been replaced with more inclusive language such as “they” and “them”. Grant Barrett, the head of lexicography at Dictionary.com, explains that using “they” not only adheres to proper grammar but also aligns with a more accepting and inclusive view of self-identity. - nepo baby: a celebrity with a famous parent whose connections in the industry are seen as crucial to their success.
- shower orange: an orange that’s peeled and eaten during a steamy shower, believed to enhance its citrusy scent and provide a soothing experience for the person showering.
- coffee nap: a brief nap, usually 15-30 minutes, taken immediately after drinking coffee, thought to amplify the energizing effects of caffeine due to the body’s decrease in adenosine levels during sleep.
- Big Pharma: a collective term referring to pharmaceutical companies, especially in the context of their political and commercial influence.
- chatbot: a computer program designed to respond to user messages with conversational or informational replies.
- stress eating: the act of emotional eating, particularly as a response to stress, tension, or anxiety.
- polysexual: describing a person who is sexually attracted to individuals of various genders, but not necessarily all genders.
- atmospheric river: a narrow and elongated zone in the atmosphere that carries a substantial amount of concentrated water vapor from the tropics.
- bloatware: unwanted software preinstalled on a newly purchased device that negatively affects its performance.
- mountweazel: a fictitious entry inserted into a reference work, such as a dictionary or encyclopedia, to catch plagiarism of content by other publishers.
