Oct. 3 (UPI) — A heartwarming story unfolded in Maryland when Elio Figueroa decided to surprise his wife with a scratch-off lottery ticket, and it turned out to be a $50,000 winner.
Elio, who resides in Prince George’s County, brought the lottery tickets from Sunrise Market & Deli in Beltsville. While scanning them to check for any wins, Elio came up empty-handed. Nevertheless, he decided to purchase a few scratch-off tickets as a gesture of love for his wife, Maria.
After taking a break from cooking, Maria scratched off the tickets and was elated to find that one of them, a $20 $50,000 Cash scratch-off, appeared to be a winner. To confirm her excitement, she called Elio to double-check.
“She definitely matched the winning number,” Elio shared. “But as I scratched off the prize amount, there were more and more zeros.”
Initially believed to be a $5,000 ticket, the couple soon realized that they had won a whopping $50,000.
“We were all so happy,” Maria exclaimed. “I can’t believe he brought home a $50,000 win!”
In plans for their winnings, Elio and Maria intend to put the money toward a down payment on a new home for their family.
