Hospital Sexual Harassment Case Resolved: Empowered Woman Triumphs

A settlement has been reached in the case of a woman, known as Jane Doe 2, who filed a lawsuit against Barlow Respiratory Hospital alleging sexual harassment by her boss for over a year. The Elysian Park facility, located near Dodger Stadium, resolved the case during a mandatory settlement conference presided by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed. In her lawsuit filed in October 2018, Doe 2 accused her manager/supervisor, Douglas Vela, of using his authority to sexually harass multiple female employees, including herself.

The lawsuit claimed that despite Vela’s admission to almost all of the sexual conduct, Barlow Hospital dismissed the plaintiff’s complaint. Throughout the 18 months of working overlapping shifts or coming into contact on opposite shifts, Vela allegedly persistently harassed, assaulted, and demanded sexual favors from Doe 2 in exchange for job benefits. Doe 2’s court papers also alleged charges of retaliation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent hiring, and assault and battery.

According to the hospital’s attorneys, Vela acknowledged engaging in some inappropriate behavior with Doe 2 but insisted that all their interactions were consensual. However, in July 2017, Vela was terminated after 13 years of employment when the hospital’s management discovered he had lied about his involvement with other employees and assured the hospital that there would be no other co-workers coming forward with similar allegations.
