Honoring the Legacy of Rick Jeanneret, the Legendary Voice of Buffalo Sabres Broadcasting

Remembering the Iconic Voice of the Sabres: Rick Jeanneret

By Bradley Girdler

Rick Jeanneret, the legendary voice of the Sabres, has sadly passed away at the age of 81. In a statement released by Jeanneret’s family, it was revealed that he died with loved ones by his side after a courageous two-year battle with multi-organ failure. His memory will forever be cherished by all who knew him.

Not only was Jeanneret a hall of famer and one of the greatest sports broadcasters of all time, but he was also an adored member of the Western New York community and an extraordinary individual. He will be best remembered for his unforgettable on-ice calls, such as “top shelf where mama hides the cookies” and “may day! may day! may day!”

Jeanneret’s voice oozed with passion, elevating the experience of watching the Sabres on the ice. Listening to one of his goal calls or energetic descriptions of a big hit would instantly send adrenaline coursing through your veins and bring a smile to your face. Phrases like “Holy Mackerel” and “call a cop, he robed him blind!” or the infamous “La la la la la LaFontaine” will forever live on as iconic expressions of his love for the team and the intensity of the moment.

Over his illustrious 51-year broadcasting career, Jeanneret received numerous accolades and honors from both the Sabres and the Hockey Hall of Fame. His exceptional contributions were recognized with the prestigious Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his broadcasting excellence.

I had the privilege of meeting Rick on multiple occasions, and he always made time for everyone. I witnessed firsthand how he would graciously stop and engage with fans, taking pictures and generously giving his time. The love and adoration from fans, players, and staff alike were a testament to his generosity, humor, passion, and unwavering professionalism. His name will forever hang in the rafters of KeyBank Arena, and his voice will forever echo in the hearts of Buffalo fans.

Following a remarkable save by Dominik Hasek or Ryan Miller, he famously exclaimed, “We are not worthy!” But looking back on Rick’s life and career, I can’t help but feel that maybe it was all of us who were not worthy of his greatness. Rest in peace, RJ.

Rick Jeanneret is survived by his wife, Sandra, his children, Mark, Chris, and Shelly, as well as numerous grandchildren.
