Introducing Skyline: Honolulu’s Official Rail System Name

Honolulu’s long-awaited rail system is set to open its first segment in West Oahu at the end of June. This ambitious project, with a price tag of nearly $10 billion, has spanned four mayoral administrations, faced delays, and exceeded its budget. However, city officials are optimistic that the new name, Skyline, represents a fresh start for the project.

According to Jon Nouchi, Deputy Director of the city’s Department of Transportation Services, the rail system never had an official name until now. Previously referred to as the “Honolulu High Capacity Transit Corridor Project,” it was commonly known as “rail.” After a five-year effort involving numerous potential names and input from focus groups, Skyline was chosen. The name pays homage to the panoramic views that passengers will experience along the West Oahu corridor.

During the naming process, Honolulu drew inspiration from existing rail systems across the country, such as BART in San Francisco, DART in Dallas, and the Metro in Washington, D.C. Alternative names like TheTrain, Hoku, Moku, Kui, Ilima, and Rail were considered but ultimately dismissed in favor of “Skyline.” Nouchi expressed that the name resonated with the officials and felt right.

To enhance the brand of Skyline, the rail system will feature the artistic likeness of the manu-o-Ku, also known as the white fairy tern, which is the city’s official bird. This endangered bird’s image will be displayed on the HOLO card, the means of accessing Skyline.

Mayor Rick Blangiardi recently announced that the first phase of the rail line, spanning 11 miles from East Kapolei to Aloha Stadium, will commence interim passenger operations on June 30th at 2 p.m. A grand opening celebration is scheduled earlier in the day at the Halawa rail station, with dignitaries and entertainment in attendance.

We hope you are as excited as we are about the launch of Skyline. Stay tuned for more updates as Honolulu’s rail system becomes a reality.
