Homewood Community Sports: Empowering Kids to Succeed Beyond the Field – KD Sunday Spotlight

Homewood County Sports is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children and teenagers succeed not only on the field but also in life. Our team of volunteers is driven by the goal of making kids happy and steering them away from violence by encouraging their involvement in sports.

One of our shining examples is Mubarik Ismaeli, also known as “Coach Mu.” Having grown up in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood, Coach Mu understands the value of hard work from a young age. He now leads our organization as the president and executive director, fulfilling his desire to give back to the community that supported him.

Established in the 1950s, Homewood Community Sports offers various sports options, including football, cheerleading, rugby, wrestling, and track and field. Our coaches, who are all volunteers, not only teach children how to excel in their chosen sports but also instill vital life skills such as teamwork, conflict resolution, and being part of something bigger than themselves.

We currently have around 260 kids aged 5 to 14 participating in our football and cheerleading programs. Excitingly, our Homewood Bulldawgs will soon be playing on a brand-new field, a project that we have eagerly awaited for years. This renovation will also enable us to expand our offerings to include sports like soccer and lacrosse.

While we strive to create a safe and positive environment for our kids, we acknowledge the tragedy that recently struck our community. The loss of 12-year-old Denzel Nowlin Junior to gun violence deeply affected us all, and we dedicate our season to his memory. It drives us to do even more for the children, ensuring they never have to endure such trauma and promoting a disciplined and positive upbringing.

Our coaches play a multitude of roles, acting as mentors, babysitters, nurses, and teachers to the kids. We even extend our support to academic struggles by assisting in schools. By being involved in our program, children thrive at home, improve academically, and experience stronger family and community bonds.

Our ultimate aim is to guide kids in facing challenges head-on, emphasizing that life is precious and must be cherished. We actively work towards reducing violence in our communities, collaborating with other youth sports organizations to address any issues that come to our attention.

We appreciate the overwhelming support from the community and our dedicated coaches. Once you become a part of the Homewood family, you remain a part of our family forever. Our motivation stems from the happiness and success of the kids we serve. Witnessing their joy and seeing the positive impact we have on their lives is what fuels us every day.
