Hollywood Studios Present Compelling AI Deal for WGA Writers

Hollywood studios presented screenwriters on the picket lines with a fresh agreement on Friday, addressing concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) and viewer data. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), representing major studios and streamers like Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount, agreed to credit humans as the official writers of screenplays instead of AI bots. However, writers belonging to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) are still working to ensure that AI does not undermine their compensation and recognition. The AMPTP has also proposed sharing data on streaming service viewership, allowing writers to gauge the popularity of the programs they contributed to. However, this transparency on viewership would not directly affect compensation. The AMPTP’s proposal also addresses TV staff minimums and grants showrunners authority over determining the size of the staff. Details regarding the budget of the show and negotiations with the WGA remain confidential. The WGA spokesperson referred to the union’s latest update, indicating that they will evaluate the AMPTP’s offer before responding next week. The ongoing discussions will rely on the financial terms outlined in the contracts of the Directors Guild of America (DGA). Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed his commitment to reaching an agreement, while stressing the potential detrimental impact of a prolonged strike. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos echoed similar sentiments, expressing a desire to end the strike quickly and equitably. The AMPTP is yet to respond to requests for comment. If the WGA accepts the latest offer, it would align more closely with their initial demands and potentially end the strike sooner than anticipated. The strike, which began on May 2 and involves over 11,500 writers, was joined by more than 160,000 workers represented by SAG-AFTRA in July. A possible deal would halt the production halts of highly anticipated films and streaming favorites. Previously, an executive within the AMPTP indicated that the studios would prolong negotiations until union members start facing severe financial hardship, estimating that most writers would be running out of money by October.
