‘Hillary Clinton Describes Trump Indictments as a ‘Disturbing Time for Our Nation”

Less than an hour following a grand jury’s return of indictments in the 2020 election interference case in Georgia, Hillary Clinton expressed her concern for the state of our country. In an interview on MSNBC, Clinton shared her deep sadness regarding the numerous charges brought against former President Donald J. Trump, which she believes strike at the core of our democracy.

During the interview, Rachel Maddow asked Clinton if she felt satisfied since she had previously warned the nation about Trump’s potential threat to democracy. In response, Clinton expressed no sense of satisfaction and questioned whether anyone should feel that way. However, she did highlight the satisfaction that comes from exposing Trump’s attempts to silence the truth and undermine democracy.

It is worth noting that Trump faces charges not only in the Georgia case but also in federal court for obstructing Congress in six states, including Georgia, during the certification of President Biden’s victory. Additionally, he faces charges in a federal court in Florida for mishandling classified documents and in a New York state court regarding hush-money payments made to a porn star during the 2016 campaign.

Clinton, who competed against Trump for the presidency in 2016, has been a subject of Trump’s attacks and the focus of his Republican allies throughout these investigations. Republicans often point to the Justice Department’s decision in 2016 not to charge Clinton for her use of a private email server while she served as secretary of state. However, official investigations have determined that Clinton did not deliberately mishandle classified material. In fact, an inspector general’s report in 2018 supported the FBI’s decision not to press charges against her.

On the night of the interview, Clinton commended President Biden’s leadership and criticized the Republican Party for what she sees as a loss of integrity and principles. She emphasized the importance of utilizing the rule of law and elections to defeat those who seek to weaponize divisiveness and undermine democratic values and institutions.

According to Clinton, the attack on the nation’s election system represents a critical moment in a series of efforts to erode public trust in voting and democracy. She likened the tactics employed on January 6th to those of authoritarian leaders who attempt to manipulate perception. Looking ahead to 2024, Clinton emphasized the significance of defeating anti-American political ideas and values.
