Hiker missing in Santa Ana Mountains discovered deceased in Sierra Nevada; wife witnesses abrupt halt of his tracking signal – Orange County Register

A tragic incident has occurred during a backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevada mountains, leading to the death of Stephen Bloor, a 57-year-old man from Santa Ana, California. Bloor’s wife grew concerned when his GPS tracking device remained stationary for an extended period of time, prompting her to contact the authorities.

Bloor had embarked on a solo hike from Devils Postpile near Mammoth Lakes to the Lake Tahoe area, covering a distance of approximately 180 miles. According to reports, he had informed fellow hikers along the John Muir Trail that he planned to spend the first night at Garnet Lake, which was a 10-mile hike from his starting point. However, during his last communication with his wife around 6 p.m., it became apparent that he had deviated from the main trail and was in the vicinity of Iceberg Lake, situated at an elevation of 10,000 feet and 3 miles southwest of Garnet.

His wife was unable to contact him thereafter, either through his phone or his satellite communication device. Concerned for his well-being, she promptly reported him missing to the Mono County sheriff’s office. A collaborative effort between the Madera and Mono county sheriff’s offices, along with the assistance of a California Highway Patrol helicopter, resulted in the discovery of Bloor’s body on the evening of August 19. He was found on a treacherous boulder field near Iceberg Lake, indicating that he had sustained fatal injuries from a fall.

Due to the hazardous weather conditions associated with Tropical Storm Hilary, the recovery operation had to be postponed. Eventually, on August 22, the Madera County sheriff’s office successfully transported Bloor’s body. This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of outdoor activities and the importance of caution and preparedness in such situations.
