Highway Crash Claims the Life of Racing Driver Ashlea Albertson, Tony Stewart Team Member

Indiana State Police are currently conducting an investigation into a tragic incident of road rage, which resulted in the death of Ashlea Albertson, a talented driver for Tony Stewart Racing. The incident took place on I-65 in Jackson County, just south of Seymour, Indiana. The police received a report of a fatal two-vehicle crash on Friday morning.

According to the police, Albertson, 24 years old, was a passenger in a white 2018 GMC Terrain driven by Jacob Kelly, 31 years old, who was engaged to Albertson. The couple had plans to get married in March 2024, as mentioned in a social media post by Kelly’s family and their online wedding itinerary on The Knot.

Video footage and evidence from the scene revealed that both Kelly and Austin Cooper, 22 years old, who was driving a black Chevrolet Malibu, were traveling northbound on I-65. The two vehicles engaged in a high-speed chase, refusing to let each other change lanes.

The police stated, “Cooper’s vehicle attempted to change lanes into the path of Kelly’s vehicle, causing Kelly to lose control and spin. This resulted in a collision between the two vehicles in the middle of the northbound lanes.”

Kelly’s car flipped over, causing Albertson to be ejected from the vehicle. Cooper’s car ended up in a field east of the roadway. Both Albertson and Kelly were flown to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, Albertson succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, while Kelly received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Cooper and an underage passenger were transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Indiana, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, and blood tests were conducted on both drivers. Toxicology results are pending. Once the investigation concludes, the case will be presented to prosecutors for review.

Albertson’s father, Todd, shared an emotional video on her official racing Facebook page, announcing her tragic passing. Tributes and condolences poured in on social media, including a heartfelt message from her teammate, Tony Stewart, who emphasized the dangers of road rage.

Stewart tweeted, “Today, I lost a teammate. @AshDogRacing had an infectious personality and could light up any room. She was a great race car driver that was involved in a road rage accident and lost her life. In the past, I’ve also gotten caught up in road rage. I hope that we can honor Ashlea by controlling what we can control on the highway. Losing her is a sobering reminder of how precious life is. Please join me in keeping her family and friends in your prayers.”

The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the consequences of road rage. It is essential for everyone to prioritize safety and respect on the roads to prevent such devastating incidents.
